Asian World Of Martial Arts

How's your mental attitude? Has martial arts helped train your mind? Someone cuts you off in traffic. Yes, it's another one of those unsafe cellphone drivers. Then, at work, someone spills a little coffee on your papers. By accident.

Back in the car, you notice that your son left gum stuck to the upholstery in back. All the little frustrations in life. But is any of this really worth getting upset over?

No.

Not in the scheme of life on this planet. It's unfortunate that 'crud' befalls us all. So, you get dumped on from time to time. Don't let that affect your overall mood. Maybe comment on the problem; get immersed in fixing the problem; even whine during the analysis of the problem, if you must -- but as soon as a course of action is determined, whining stops.

And even if you are disappointed about any of the vicissitudes of life, this doesn't change your activities and behavior -- how you practice martial arts, treat your family, or deal with any other problem, project, or unexpected occurrence.

This kind of separation, of calm reaction to disappointments comes with martial arts training.

Martial Arts Strength of Mind

Approach your martial-arts training as if it's teaching you to have a stronger mind with a positive mental attitude (sorry, if that sounds corny): When training starts, all the cares of the outside world are left behind. You focus on training -- not on the argument you had with someone outside of class.

Martial Arts acts as your oasis -- your buffer.

I am not saying to avoid getting mad. Anger is a necessary part of life. A disciplined mind has no problem compartmentalizing the anger. It doesn't seep over into other areas of your life. And if someone angers you during class, it doesn't have to ruin your whole lesson. Deal with it, then drop it. Move on.

Never be weak enough to allow the one occurrence to infect your mood for the rest of the class period.

Be strong.

It's easy, once you decide this is how you always behave.
