After Ohio State star Greg Oden announced that he would be entering the NBA draft, Danny Ainge, Celtics’ executive director of basketball operations, preferred to stay quiet about it. Ainge has already been fined $30,000 by the NBA for making contact with a potential draft choice.
This time Ainge said that he was not willing to comment on anything because it was not yet official.
The Celtics finished with the second worst record in the NBA and this would give them a very good chance of either selecting Greg Oden or Kevin Durant of Texas during the draft. Both Oden and Durant have already announced that they will be going pro but Ainge is not ready to comment till May 3, 2007, the date when the NBA will confirm that both Oden and Durant have filed their paper for the draft.
In March 2007 after the Big 12 tournament, Ainge was fined when he sat next to Kevin Durant’s mother. The NBA reasoned that Ainge had violated the rules that expected basketball executives to keep minimum contact with the potential NBA draft picks until college players are officially declared for the draft.
During the ceremony to honor late Celtics patriarch Red Auerbach, Ainge refrained from making any comments on Oden or Durant.
The Celtics honoured Auerbach just before the game against the Yankees. The Red Sox hung out all the 16 championship banners from the Green Monster along with one which featured a silhouette of Auerbach smoking a cigar. Ainge was present along with the team owners and several current and former Celtics players on the mount while Bob Cousy threw the ceremonial first pitch.
