Tripping Over Your Turkey?
In the United States, we a celebrate Thanksgiving. Yes, even American martial artists gather to feast.
This is the day where all sit around, gorge on a big meal, and afterwards feel so stuffed, that nobody can move. Lethargy sets in. There is a modern myth that eating turkey will make you sleepy. It has to do with tryptophan and the production of serotonin.
More modern-day nutritionists feel that you aren't really getting enough to produce results ... that tryptophan works best on an empty stomach ... and that the reason we get sleepy may have more to do with the pies, mashed potatoes, stuffing, salads, appetizers,and so on.
Americans spend a lot of time stuffing their/our faces on Turkey Day.
Martial-Arts Scenario Right After the Meal
So, what does this have to do with martial arts?
By now, you know me ... I am a fan of scenario training. I often stop and ask myself, could I employ my martial skills under the following conditions. So, I ask you ... do you ever overindulge at a meal? Eat so much, that you feel you couldn't move if you had to?
You know this is coming ...
Could you defend yourself after stretching your stomach to the limit? Could you do martial arts when you are so stuffed that you feel any pressure on your stomach would cause serious, permanent damage, and when you can't even lean forward to get out of the easy chair, because your stomach is overly full?
Would you really be able to defend yourself in the big-meal, martial-arts scenario?
I love food as much as the next person ... maybe even more. (Just look at my waist size.) Maybe, as a martial artist who is always prepared, I should stop before the overstuffed feeling sets in. The answer to this problem is to avoid the overstuffed, martial-arts scenario in the first place.
After all, you never know when ...
