Self Defense And Martial Arts

Are you offended that some people make a distinction between women's self defense and men's self defense? For some reason men’s martial arts is often thought of as the study of a complete system, that can get very advanced. A total martial-arts experience. On the other hand, self defense classes for women are thought to cover only the basics. A bunch of women learning to kick at the groin.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t accept these stereotypes. They are not part of my martial reality....

Don’t you think that martial arts, whether a men’s class, a mixed class, or a class for women should be practical? All of those classes should focus on practical application, wouldn’t you agree?

Note: My goals in the martial arts are about staying safe, defending my loved ones against the meanies out there. If it’s not practical, then I won’t practice it over and over.

Both classes should focus on what works in real self-defense situations. Of course, martial artists who compete should spend time on the artificial -- sparring according to rules. Still, both classes should emphasize the practical.

Tailored to the Individual

Instead of having a women’s class and a men’s class, and martial-arts moves that are taught in one class but not in the other, it makes more sense to tailor the moves to the individual.

There are certain techniques that require a lot of weight behind them. A lot of muscle, too. Small women ... AND small men ... AND children should avoid these moves.

If you are small, you learn to dart in and out, stay on the center line, and slip out of holds, to get away.

If you are a big person, male or female, then you might want to spend more time on holds and grappling, along with your eye jabs and groin kicks. It makes more sense to tell the individual what the best moves are for him or her than to require an entire class to limit themselves one style of fighting or one set of martial-arts techniques.

Doesn’t all of this make you wonder which class is right for you? If you are interested, there is an article that explores this subject more, Women’s Self Defense - A Class of Men?
