I love the book of Habakkuk in the Bible. Unlike other prophets in the Bible, we get to listen in on an intimate conversation between Habakkuk and God. Some say this is a prayer but I see it as a question and answer session between God and Habakkuk.
Habakkuk starts of in chapter one with a question for God. He wonders how long he has to wait before God does something about the injustices in Judah. There is a burden on Habakkuk's heart. The burden is threefold.
Habakkuk is wondering if God will judge those that are causing the problems in Judah. Habakkuk is also wondering if God will lift up the trodden and broken hearted that have been doing what God wanted them to do. Habakkuk also wants God to show His power to the nations around Judah so that the nations will know who the one true God is.
Like so many times in life, when we pray for something God gives us an answer but it might not be exactly what we were looking for. Habakkuk received such an answer from God. God begins to tell Habakkuk that he will build up the Chaldeans and they will swiftly conquer Judah. The whole incident is not going to be pretty. It turns out that what God said would happen does happen in the next few years.
Habakkuk then asks God another question. He wants to know why God would use the Chaldeans to carryout His judgment. After all the Chaldeans were a less righteous people than Habakkuk's, at least in Habakkuk's mind. At the end of chapter one, we find Habakkuk waiting for an answer from God.
The lesson is that sometimes we ask for something from God and we get an answer we might not like. The fact is that God has His plan and His plan will be carried out. Sometimes what we want is not what God wants. It is better to trust in God's plan than ours.
